Qasida al ‘Aql – Taffakur on abya’t sharifa 87

Qasida al Aql – Sayedna Taher Saifuddin Moula (AQ)

87 وَتَخَلَّقَنْ خُلُقًا عَظِيمًا نَشْرُهُ
بين الْوَرى يَذْكُمْ كَمِسْكِ

Acquire virtues, excellent virtues
whose fragrance wafts through the world like redolent musk

This verse seems to emphasise the significance of acquiring and embodying virtues that have a lasting impact, much like the fragrance of redolent musk that spreads through the world. It highlights the value of cultivating virtues that have a positive influence on others and leave a memorable, beautiful essence behind.

The virtues mentioned could encompass a wide range of qualities, but here are some examples and ways to acquire them:

1. Compassion: Practice empathy and understanding towards others’ struggles and joys. Engage in acts of kindness and support for those in need.

Quran Ayat

-And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds. (Quran 21:107)

2. Honesty:Be truthful in your words and actions, maintaining integrity even in challenging situations. Practice transparency and sincerity.

Quran Ayat

“O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.”(Quran 9:119)

And cover not truth with falsehood, nor conceal the truth when you know (what it is).”(Quran 2:42)

3. Generosity: Share your resources, time, and support willingly with others without expecting anything in return. Cultivate a mindset of giving.

Quran Ayats

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills.”  2:261)

“The hand of Allah is with those who do good.”* (Quran 16:128)

4.Patience: Develop the ability to endure difficulties calmly and persistently. Practice mindfulness and meditation to enhance patience.

Quran Ayat

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].”(Quran 2:45)

5.  Courage:Face fears and challenges bravely, stepping out of your comfort zone to achieve growth. Embrace vulnerability and take calculated risks.

Quran Ayat

And Allah loves those who are firm and steadfast.(Quran 3:146)

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.” (Quran 3:200)

6. Humility Acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses without arrogance. Be open to learning from others and admit when you’re wrong.

Quran Ayat

“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.”* (Quran 25:63)

7. Gratitude: Cultivate appreciation for life’s blessings, both big and small. Keep a gratitude journal and regularly reflect on what you’re thankful for.

Quran Ayat

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'(Quran 14:7)

“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.”* (Quran 2:152)

Acquiring these virtues involves consistent practice and self-reflection. Engage in daily actions that align with these virtues, seek role models who embody them, and be mindful of your thoughts and behaviors in various situations to reinforce these qualities within yourself.
